Visiting senior Monay Lee was commended during the Feb. 25 home game by receiving the honor of scoring the first basket after enduring her season-ending injury of a torn ACL. At the end of the game however, the Chico State women’s basketball team lost in the battle against the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros in a final score of 49-69.

The loss drops Chico State to a conference record of 5-14 and an overall season record of 10-15.

Chico State welcomed Dominguez Hills by offering a career-changing opportunity to Lee. She tore her anterior cruciate ligament during Dominguez Hills’ senior night game against Cal State L.A. on Feb. 13. Lee stepped onto the court sharing the title of Toro’s career scoring record with former player Tameka Blue.

However before Lee could take the title for herself, during the Toro’s first possession of the ball Lee was sent to the sidelines with the infamous injury that would later be determined to end her season.

As a sign of sympathy and respect head coach Brian Fogel offered Lee the opportunity that fate had stolen from her. In a wonderful gesture to Lee and Cal State Dominguez Hills, Chico State women’s basketball team allowed Lee to score the first basket of the game uncontested.

When Lee stepped up to take her shot she completed her layup giving her sole possession of the scoring title. She now holds the record of 1,472 points over the course of her 4-year career with the Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team.

The Toros dominated the Wildcats over the course of the game, shooting a field goal percentage of 35.5, compared to Chico State’s 29. Dominguez Hills shot at 91 percent from the charity stripe compared to Chico State’s 78. Chico State did however win the rebounding battle with 42 compared to Dominguez Hills’ 36.

Key Players:

Brooke Bowen: 15 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block

McKena Barker: 6 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block, 1 steal

Irie Stokes: 8 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal

The Wildcats next hit the court on Feb 27. against Cal State L.A. in Los Angeles at 5:30 pm.
