Portland Place apartments on the corner of Sixth and Orange Street just won a national design award.

AEP Span, a manufacturer of architectural metal products, awarded the building for its unique design, colors and a contribution to the community.

The complex was built in 2014 and has since been a popular place for Chico State students to reside. Its particular style of architecture is a stark contrast from the rest of downtown Chico.

John Mull is the owner of Orange Street Consignment, which is directly across the street for the complex. He believes the building was deserving of the award.

“Some people were saying it was ugly, but I didn’t think so. I think it conforms with the neighborhood,” he said.
