The Chico State baseball team secured the sixth and final seed of the CCAA tournament with a 6-0 win over the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors on Saturday, May 7.

Heading into the final four games of the season, the ‘Cats just needed one win to clinch a spot in the postseason.

After dropping the first two games, sophomore Hunter Haworth threw seven shutout innings to give the team the opportunity to possibly taste postseason glory. Haworth scattered six hits and struck out six in the win.

The offense jumped out early, scoring five runs in the first three innings. Seniors Ben Gamba and juniors Dillon Kelley and Cody Snider led the hitting attack with two hits and an RBI each.

The win puts the team at 31-19 overall to finish the season, capturing 13 more wins than last year’s squad.

The team battled a tough conference all season long, finishing at 21-17 in CCAA play.

The ‘Cats offense was led by senior Ben Gamba and junior Sonny Cortez. The duo both hit over .360, while Gamba led the CCAA in RBIs and Cortez finished first in runs.

Junior pitcher Clayton Gelfand had a breakout year from the mound, leading the team in almost every statistical category for pitching.

Gelfand found himself top 10 in the CCAA in ERA, opponent batting average and second in strikeouts, wins and innings pitched.

The team takes on the No. 1 seed Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday, May 11 in Stockton to start the CCAA tournament.
