Fall 2020 Ed Board Application

News Editor: Oversees the reporting, writing and editing of news copy for The Orion website. Must report and write at least five stories during the semester. Editors are required to hold weekly section meetings to assign stories and should hold conferences with individual section members as necessary.

Sports Editor: Oversees the reporting, writing and editing of sports copy for The Orion website. Must report and write at least five stories during the semester. Editors are required to hold weekly section meetings to assign stories and should hold conferences with individual section members as necessary.

AE Editor: Oversees the reporting, writing and editing of Arts and Entertainment copy for The Orion website. Must report and write at least five stories during the semester. Editors are required to hold weekly section meetings to assign stories and should hold conferences with individual section members as necessary.

Opinion Editor: Oversees the writing and editing of opinion copy for The Orion website. Must write at least 10 columns during the semester. Editors are required to hold weekly section meetings to assign stories and should hold conferences with individual section members as necessary.

Graphic Designer: Must assign but also produce infographics (Adobe Illustrator) and datagraphics (R) for The Orion’s website. Position requires mastering advanced software programs and designing powerful graphics. Editors are required to hold weekly section meetings to assign stories and should hold conferences with individual section members as necessary.  

Multimedia Editor: Must assign photographers to cover events for The Orion in a timely manner. Position requires shooting your own photos or videos on a weekly basis. The Orion will prioritize slide shows on our website during Fall 2020, and the multimedia editor will play a central role in securing that content. Editors are required to hold weekly section meetings to assign stories and should hold conferences with individual section members as necessary.

Podcast Producer: Must produce a weekly podcast, no longer than 15 minutes in length, highlighting The Orion’s original content on a weekly basis. Applicants should have experience or be committed to learning how to edit podcasts on Adobe Audition or similar platforms. The producer will need to work with the EIC and the adviser to launch this important new addition. Editors are required to hold weekly section meetings to assign stories and should hold conferences with individual section members as necessary.  

Copy Desk Chief: Must edit Orion headlines, stories and captions for structure, clarity, accuracy and Associated Press style. The Copy Chief should be able to provide constructive criticism for articles. As the last line of defense, the copy editor must speak up when stories don’t meet The Orion’s high standards. Editors are required to hold weekly section meetings to assign stories and should hold conferences with individual section members as necessary.

Website/Newsletter Editor: Build, design, track and occasionally code pages and content for The Orion website. This will require learning how to use SNO and WordPress under the supervision of the adviser. Stories must be posted in a timely manner. Editors are required to hold weekly section meetings to assign stories and should hold conferences with individual section members as necessary.   

PR/Social Media Editor: Create daily social media posts and campaigns and tailor them for various platforms. When appropriate, you will help draft web content, newsletters, email messages and press releases. The position requires keeping up with analytics and tracking the performance of each post using a spreadsheet. Editors are required to hold weekly section meetings to assign stories and should hold conferences with individual section members as necessary.  

NOTE TO APPLICANTS: All applicants agree to make communication the highest priority. The Orion will not tolerate leaders who fail to communicate with their teams. All applicants agree to hold virtual or in-person section meetings and provide constructive feedback on a weekly basis. Failure to do so will result in termination from The Orion Editorial Board staff. 

All your work must uphold the highest journalistic ethics: accuracy, independence and accountability. It is your responsibility to report and correct any and all mistakes or inaccuracies published in The Orion. Failure to do so will lead to immediate termination. 

Ed Board members may earn up to $250 in awards for the semester, but this is not guaranteed. Awards will be given based on performance.
