Playing in Sacramento Sunday, at the Sacramento Rivercats stadium Raley Field, the Chico State baseball team won in convincing fashion over Sonoma State, with a final score of 7-2.

The victory earned the ‘Cats a split in their four game series with the ‘Wolves, improving their record to 6-4 overall in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Sonoma State dropped to 5-9 and 2-6 in the CCAA.

Chico State jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the fourth inning after scoring three in the first, one in the third and two more in the bottom half of the fourth.

Senior catcher Peter Miller helped the ‘Cats draw first blood with an RBI double to take the lead, senior first baseman Tyler Madrid followed up with an RBI groundout.

Senior outfielder Connor Huesers drove a single into center field to give Chico State a 3-0 lead.

Making his first collegiate start on the minor-league mound was sophomore pitcher Clayton Gelfand.

Gelfand struggled his control, walking four batters, but was able to give the ‘Cats four shutout innings before being pulled after allowing two baserunners in the top of the fifth.

Both runners would eventually score before junior reliever A.J. Epstein got out of the jam.

Leading the Chico State offense assault was junior infielder Andrew Carrillo who went 4-for-5 with one RBI on the afternoon. Carrillo is now batting .567 on the season.

Epstein came in with nobody out and the bases loaded in the fifth, before getting a double-play and strike out to end the ending.

In total Epstein went four innings, struck out four and walked one without giving up a hit. Epstein improved to 2-0 with the win.

Making his first appearance since 2013, pitcher Ryan O’Shea came in for the ninth inning to set the ‘Wolves down in order, striking out the side and ending the game.
