The No. 25 ranked Chico State volleyball team earned a much needed win Friday on the road against Cal Poly Pomona, sweeping the Broncos in three sets, 25-21, 25-21, 25-20.

The Wildcats stayed focused all week to get the win Friday and even practiced in Shurmer Gym instead of Acker Gym since the lighting and floor conditions in Shurmer Gym are similar to that of Cal Poly Pomona’s home court, Wildcat head coach Cody Hein said.

The ‘Cats were led by sophomore Makenzie Snyder who racked up a match high 20 kills to go along with nine digs. Freshman right side hitter Jessica Leek contributed her highest kill total of the season with 15 while freshman setter Sable Villaescusa finished with 44 assists as Chico State posted 52 kills compared to only 15 attacking errors.

“Everything has been about Pomona this week,” Hein said. “We could not have another loss to another team with a losing record. It would be devastating.”

The ‘Cats were careful not to overlook the Broncos on Friday before their big Saturday night match up against No. 3 ranked Cal State San Bernardino. But after winning the first set 25-18, Chico State dropped three straight as the Coyotes prevailed, 25-19, 25-9, 25-23. Villaescusa put together a balanced attack dishing out 40 assists in the losing effort as Snyder led the Wildcats with 12 kills and 15 digs while senior Gillian Heydorff tallied eight kills to go along with her 15 digs &- both had two service aces. Jacqueline Johnson finished with eight kills, Kayla Baumgardner with seven and Leek with six.

The split weekend put the ‘Cats at 19-6 on the season and 10-5 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Wildcats will begin a five-game homestand at 7 tonight at Acker Gym against Cal State Stanislaus, which is 2-9 in CCAA play.
