March 1, 2007Chico State’s women’s basketball team trounced Humboldt State 72-50 as the team’s season comes closer to the end.

The Wildcats avenged their previous loss to the Lumberjacks, which was a slip-up, said forward Amber Simmons.

“They definitely didn’t shoot 60 percent,” Simmons said.

This time when the two teams met up Humboldt State shot only 36 percent for the game, while Chico State shot 51 percent.

Simmons led all scorers with 22 points and a career high 5 blocks. Niki Simons added 12, while Renee Goldoff scored 10.

Despite the ‘Cats high shooting percentage, both teams looked sloppy at the beginning of the game with some early turnovers. Chico State was able to calm down and score its first couple of baskets while keeping the Lumberjacks from scoring the first three minutes of the games.

With about five and half minutes left in the game, Chico State pulled away with a 14-point lead that turned into 22-point lead to end the game.

“They gave up a little bit and we didn’t let down,” Simmons said.

With one game left before playoffs the ‘Cats are one game behind UC San Diego as of last week, for the conference championship.

Even as the post-season looms Chico State is focusing on it last game and not the playoffs, Niki Simons said.

“First we have to win the last game.”
