2 ‘Cats make league team

The 9-9-1 men’s soccer team played well enough in 2006 to have two players on the All-CCAA first team. Midfielder Jason Phillips and defender Mike Gardner were named to the first team, goalkeeper Brian Linne was named to the second team, and forward A.J. Carboneau made the honorable mention list.

Lacrosse sees success

The women’s lacrosse team held its alumni game Saturday and defeated a team of 14 alumni. On Sunday in Davis, the team competed in four half-hour games against UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, Cal Poly San Lois Obispo and a women’s club team from Sacramento. Score wasn’t kept, but the Wildcats improved every game, head coach Nate Hendel said.

Golf finishes eighth

Men’s golf finished eighth in the Sonoma State Invitational at the Santa Rosa Country Club. The Wildcats had a score of 895 over 54 holes, with Kevin Horan placing the highest in 12th place with a total score of 221.

USC’s winning streak ends

The University of Southern California Trojans went to Oregon State on Saturday and lost 33-31. The loss also ended three more winning streaks for USC: its 38-game regular season winning streak, a 27-game Pac-10 winning streak and a run of 18 straight wins on the road.

Woman of year announced

Former Wake Forest cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field athlete Anne Bersagel was named the NCAA woman of the year at the association’s 16th annual awards dinner. The award is given to a former student-athlete who has completed her eligibility and has shown academic and athletic excellence. Bersagel graduated in December 2005.

Florida Gators No. 1

The defending champion Florida Gators men’s basketball team will be No. 1 for at least one more week with the release of the preseason USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll. Behind the Gators in the top five are North Carolina, Kansas, Ohio State and UCLA. Florida beat UCLA last year for the national championship.
