An ambulance in view behind the fallen branch

First responders load a woman believed to be a Chico State student into an ambulance after being struck by a fallen tree limb while sitting on a bench.

The woman struck by a falling tree limb earlier today has died, said Chico State Director of Public Affairs and Publications Joe Wills.

A maple branch fell about 20 feet and hit the woman in the head around 3:10 p.m. today between Butte and Lassen halls.

The Chico State student’s identity will be withheld until the family is notified.

The branch was about 14 inches in diameter and struck her as she was sitting on a bench, said Chico Fire Division Chief Bill Hack said.

When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, the woman was unconscious and fire rescue began CPR.

As the ambulance left the school around 3:30 p.m., medics were still performing resuscitation efforts.

Wills said the school brought a tree expert in this summer to inspect the trees and the campus passed the inspection.
