For the second straight week, the Wildcats men’s golf team made a jump up the leaderboard from outside the top-10 starting the final round to a third place finish.

The ‘Cats claimed the day’s best team score in Tuesdays final round.

Chico State’s team total of 296 was 11 shots better than any other team’s, as they jumped from eighth to third in the final round of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout/West Region Preview at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Course.

The third-ranked Wildcats have finished in the top-five in 17 straight events.

Once again it was junior All-American Alistair Docherty leading the charge, after an opening round 80.

Docherty turned in a final round score of 2-under par 70 tied for the low round of the day as he vaulted from 50th to 8th on the leaderboard, extending his personal top-10 finish streak to five.

On a day when the average score was 80.6 the Wildcats turned in four out of five final round scores of 77 or lower. Junior All-Americans Lee Gearhart and Justin Wiles were among five competitors who finished at 12-over par tied for 19th.

Gearhart shot 77 while Wiles came in at two-over par 74 in his final round. Shooting a 75 to finish tied for 24th at 13-over was Zachary Sardina. Colby Dean carded a final round 85 to finish 100th in the 108 man field.

Chico State wraps up the regular season at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational April 13-14 in Turlock before starting postseason play.
