First place finisher in the Advanced Women’s category, Christina Saschin holds on before her next move.

The smell of hand chalk and the sight of brightly colored tape filled the WREC on Sunday, April 10 for the fifth annual climbing competition, The Ruckus.

The competition solely focused on bouldering, a specific type of climbing that doesn’t require ropes or harnesses. Although it can be done with no equipment at all, the WREC allowed hand chalk as well as safety mats.

Starting at 1 p.m., the contestants had 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete as many routes as they could. As they climbed, each competitor recorded the amount of attempts it took them to finish without falling.

The top scorers were judged by a sum total of their top four climbs of the day. The WREC provided 28 brand new routes for climbers to choose from.

Local companies such as Klean Kanteen and The Bear sponsored the event.

The competition had four different divisions: Women’s Advanced, Women’s Recreational, Men’s Advanced and Men’s Recreational.

The winners were given a small ceremony after all the climbing had been done.

Results:

  • Women’s Advanced: 1st Christina Saschin, 2nd Paige Siniscalchi, 3rd Brie Evans.
  • Women’s Recreational: 1st Ashley Hugg, 2nd Sarah Tichy, 3rd Gianna Tomasello.
  • Men’s Advanced: 1st Samuel Steadman, 2nd Nick Bair, 3rd Justin Caswell.
  • Men’s Recreational: 1st Will Cayler, 2nd Jamie Waldear, 3rd Spencer Short.
