Two suspects are on the loose after an armed robbery near the Chico State Student Health Center.

The incident occurred Saturday at around 2:30 p.m.

The two suspects approached a victim and asked to borrow a cell phone. They requested the password to the phone but when the victim denied giving them the password and asked for the phone back, the attackers pulled out a firearm refusing to return the phone.

The suspects are identified as possible teenagers. One of them was wearing a white long sleeve t-shirt and the other a grey hoodie with red accents, according to the University Police Department in a press release.

The case remains under investigation.

As a way to keep students safe UPD advises students to:

  • Be cautious about allowing strangers to borrow personal property
  • Do not give out personal passwords or passcodes
  • Alert law enforcement immediately if weapons or possible weapons are displayed

Further information on the incident may be reported to UPD at 530-898-5555 using the reference case #17-0630.

There appears to be a real increase in crime on campus and in the campus neighborhoods. What is being done about it? Shootings, muggings, even a murder recently. The ER reported recently reported campus sexual assaults doubled in new last year, which was CSU President Gayle Hutchinson’s first year as president. Over the summer Chief Feeny – who worked previously in a big city PD was let go, and now the campus PD Chief is a temp. The guy hails from CSU Channel Islands, a tiny state university with little or no crime problems. One of President Hutchinson’s duties is to work to keep the campus safe, but you are seeing all this crime now, along with more student-on-student sexual assaults. I am wondering why the Orion isn’t on top of this story. The paper is doing a good job reporting the crimes – individually – but we’ve seen no big picture story by the Orion that would highlight public safety issues on campus. Fact is, the campus and the surrounding neighborhoods seem less safe now than ever, based on all these crime stories I have been reading in the Orion. You are seeing gun violence now at parties, that’s has never been the case in previous years. I think the Orion could do more coverage on public safety issues . The paper needs to put President Hutchinson and the campus PD on the hot-seat, they must work to keep the campus safer.

Crime on the Chico State campus and in adjacent neighborhoods is clearly is on the upswing. We’ve seen a murder, a shooting, and a mugging just in the last 2 weeks. Additionally, last year – CSU Chico President Gayle Hutchinson first full year as President – sexual assaults on campus doubled according to the Chico ER. This surge in crime that appears to be happening during Gayle Hutchinson’s tenure as President should be giving students, faculty, and staff pause.. Keeping students, faculty, and staff safe is one of Hutchinson’s job duties. Does Hutchinson have the right people in place at the campus police force to keep members of the college community safe? It doesn’t look like it to me, just look at all the crime you are seeing. We are seeing gun violence taking place now, which was never the case in previous years. I believe the Orion staff should be on top this crime epidemic – the Orion should be editorializing on whether or not Hutchinson can keep students, faculty, and staff safe. The Orion is doing a good job reporting the crimes, but a poor job putting the crime spree in context, and affixing the blame. It’s the campus PD and Chico PD’s fault you are seeing this uptick in crime, they are not doing their jobs as well as they were previously.
