A New Years Eve break-in at the Marketplace Cafe occurred right before the clock struck midnight.

At around 11:55 p.m. on Dec. 31 the suspect broke into the Marketplace Cafe inside the Bell Memorial Union. Three windows were shattered from one of the main glass-sliding doors into the Marketplace Cafe.

University Police arrested Andrew Davis, 22, for felony vandalism, said Joe Wills, a spokesman for Chico State. The suspect was believed to be intoxicated.

After breaking the three windows from the sliding doors, the suspect proceeded to the Marketplace Deli and shattered three sneeze guards from the Marketplace Deli, said Corinne Knapp, retail manager of AS Dining Services. The deli has since been closed for repairs and will be open by the first school week.

“He didn’t really appear to be here to steal anything,” said Knapp. “Glass shattered and got in between the cracks of the counters and in between the refrigerator,” Knapp said. “It was many hours of clean up.”

University Police arrived six minutes after the break-in and arrested the suspect on the scene, Knapp said. Police believe the suspect is not a student.

The estimate for the damage caused is $1,000, Wills said.

The suspect was arrested for felony vandalism.
