Students meet to raise awareness of university movement

Students from the Students for Quality Education (SQE) organization met Monday to inform others on the possible tuition and fee increases that all state universities could take on at the beginning of the next semester.

Here’s what you should know about the proposed tuition and fee increases:

  • The CSU Board of Trustees is proposing a CSU-wide $228 (per year) tuition increase for undergrads
  • The CSU Board of Trustees in proposing a CSU-wide $432 (per year) tuition increase for graduate students
  • CSU Chico is proposing a $190 (per semester) increase on our student learning fee, health center fee and athletics fee

On April 4, students, faculty and community allies will be speaking out and protesting in Sacramento to advocate for additional state funding.

“We want to let students know that they have power within them to advocate for their rights and that they have this opportunity to go to the capital to really demand funding,” said Radhika Katarla, Organizer for California Faculty Association.

Students from Chico State will be attending the protest.

“It’s gonna be really impactful to see that there are students from all over the CSU demanding CSU funding,” said Katarla. “The people in the capital need to know that students are really fighting for their rights, this is now or never.”

“They need to fund the CSU there isn’t any other option and they can’t continually keep putting this on the back of students,” she added. “I absolutely can’t imagine what this fee is (going to) do to our campus and the future of education within the CSU.”
