The Wildcats swept the Sonoma State Seawolves in a four-game series this past weekend.

They capped off the series on Sunday with a 7-6 victory that had everything you could ask for. Stellar offensive play, incredible defense, great teamwork and a heartwarming senior walk-off hit that resulted in a series-clinching victory.

The game, which saw the Wildcats build several leads throughout, came down to the bottom of the ninth. The Seawolves rallied in both the sixth and ninth innings to tie up the game.

The Wildcats were never dismayed and responded to Sonoma each time they attempted to sway the momentum.

Outfielder Cody Whissler was instrumental throughout the game, going 5-for-5 from the plate on the day and 8-for-8 on the weekend. It was he who crossed the plate in the bottom of the ninth after getting driven in by Trenton Stowe’s walk-off single.

“We all were taking team at-bats. All the pitchers were competing and keeping us in the game. We played the whole game with confidence.” said Whissler, “I have confidence in everyone, from the starters to the bench. I know everyone will play with the team’s best interest in mind.”

His confidence in his team is clearly justified, seeing as Stowe (the man who delivered the game-winning single) is the backup catcher and was taking his first at-bat on the day when he came through.

“I am confident with everyone in the lineup, so there is never any pressure. I know that everyone is going to do their best to get the job done. We just went out there and played hard and had fun while doing so. They were four great team wins… and everybody, from the coaches to the starters to the bench was a vital part of it.” said Whissler.

The hard-fought victory was the picture perfect way to honor the team’s seniors, who have given so much to the program and the fans throughout their four years with the team.

However, the Wildcats still have to finish strong if they hope to clinch a top-four seed and a spot in the tournament at the end of the season. They’ll have the opportunity to do so with their next win, or Cal State East Bay’s next loss.

The ‘Cats’ will look to carry the momentum from the weekend into their next matchup against San Francisco State University on Friday. The game will have monumental postseason implications and will start the last weekend of the regular season
