Chicoween participants gathered in costume at the El Rey for a silent zombie-themed disco on Halloween night. From 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., the theater hosted crowds of witches and pop culture icons dressed up in rave gear.
The event featured sets from DJ Mack Morris, DJ Cootdog and DJ Forester who mixed tracks on different channels that guests could switch between by changing the dial on their headphone sets.
“It’s just so cool because no matter what kind of music people like, they can find something that they enjoy listening to,” host Eric Tucker said. Tucker is the Power 102.1 Program Director and Afternoon Drive Host. “We have a top 40 DJ, an EDM DJ and a throwback DJ all at the same party.”
Guests seemed to agree, calling the event “super fun” and “festive.”
“It’s totally worth it,” attendee Rachelle Hunter said. “My friend and I are metal heads, but we’re still having a blast.”
Thursday’s event is the most recent in a series of silent disco events put on by Power 102.1 in partnership with Black Noise Headphones.
“Every couple of months we’ve been doing silent discos and the reception has just been so great so we decided to do one for Halloween,” Tucker said.
As for the zombie theme, Tucker (in full zombie make up) offered a simple explanation: “Who doesn’t like dressing up like a zombie?”
Despite this sentiment, costumes of all kinds were welcomed at the event.
In fact, guests were invited to participate in three different costume contests. Participants could win a $500 prize for having the scariest costume, sexiest costume and best couple’s costume.
“That’s our big thing is to be local,” Tucker said. “We like to connect with the community and be out in the community as much as possible.”
