    Wildcats open season, crush records at Chico Multi-Event Classic

    J Patrick Smith, Theodore Elsenbaumer and John Brunk led the way on day one of the Chico Multi-Event Classic at University Stadium on Thursday.

    Patrick Smith posted 3,845 points, while Elsenbaumer and Brunk put up 3,795 and 3,780 points respectively, well beyond their marks from last year’s event. The trio is also on pace to meet the 7,000 points required for the NCAA Championship Automatic Qualifying.

    Adam Nikssarian had a personal record in the shot put and high jump, finishing the day on pace for a NCAA Championship Provisional Qualifying mark.

    Smith set a new personal record with a shot put of 12.72 meters. He also had the best long jump with 7.20 meters and took second in the 100-meters and third in the high jump.

    Elsenbaumer set a personal record in the long jump and posted the day’s best high jump of 1.89 meters. Brunk also set three personal records in the 100 meters, long jump and shot put.

    The meet continues Friday at University Stadium with discus, pole vault and javelin events. Athletes will also be finishing the 1500-meter event and the 110-meter hurdles.
