On Monday a protest against the presence of ICE on campus took place from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m.
The group started off small, but as time went on, the number of attendees began to rise.
Beginning outside of the Bell Memorial Union, the group lined the street so cars driving by, as well as students and other bystanders, could see their efforts. Eventually, the group ventured further into campus in hopes of catching more student and faculty attention.
The group was informed that they “are not allowed to disrupt or be loud during business hours due to a new policy put in place,” the protest organizers of Chico State GSEC (gender and sexuality equity coalition) said.
But that didn’t stop them as chants filled the air:
“Say it loud, say it clear, immigrants are welcome here.”
“The immigrants are under attack, what do we do? Fight back!”
“From Chico to Mexico, all these borders have got to go.”
Complaints about the lack of acknowledgement from campus officials regarding the protest spread throughout the group.
“I’m really disappointed in the school because they are so passionate about their diversity and how many people they will protect, and then they go and invite the single most anti-diversity group in America at the moment,” a protest attendee who chose to remain unidentified said.
This protest was in response to ICE coming to campus for a career fair on Wednesday, due to concerns about the impact their presence will have on members of the campus community
