Former Chico State professor David Stachura lost his appeal this week to overturn a workplace violence restraining order that prohibits him from campus. This follows threats he allegedly made against two colleagues and accusations of sexual misconduct with a graduate student, during his time as an instructor.
Stachura, a former biology professor, has been prohibited from Chico State’s campus since 2023 following the restraining order issued by the Butte County Superior Court. The order lasts for three years and is set to expire in 2026.
This came after a lengthy legal battle beginning in 2020 where he was investigated and found to have had inappropriate sexual relations with a graduate student.
Stachura then allegedly threatened to kill two colleagues who complied with the investigation, which was reported by EdSource through court records filed by his then-wife in a divorce case.
“We are constantly evaluating how we are protecting campus, protecting the well being and safety of the campus,” Perez said.
When The Orion asked what specifically they were doing to protect campus, Perez said, “The restraining order, and all things we’ve done.”
The university was reportedly preparing to fire Stachura for dishonesty, sexual harassment and retaliation. He resigned in February 2024 as part of the settlement agreement.
Interim Chief of Staff Ashley Gebb confirmed that Stachura was permanently barred from working in the CSU system.
The Orion will update this story when more information becomes available.
