Chico State Wildcats women’s soccer travelled to Hawai`i to match up against the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans for their season debut, falling 1-0.
The Vulcans scored the lone goal in the 31st minute of the game, striking a low center goal off of an assist just outside the penalty area. The Wildcats failed to break even with only two shots on goal, both coming after the 70th minute.
Unable to sneak past the Vulcans’ effective physical defense, with 16 fouls but no yellow cards, the Wildcats could not find a window of opportunity to take a shot on goal until the 74th minute of the game.
Chico State did earn four corner kicks as opposed to the Vulcans two, but were promptly shut down by the opposing defense.
Despite the loss, junior goalkeeper Claire Schnabel held down her post with five saves, playing the full 90 minutes. The Wildcats’ two shots on goal came courtesy of senior midfielder Hannah Pieri and sophomore forward Aiyana Finley.
Senior defender Klayre Barres, sophomore defender Gabby Starr and freshman Malia Bell also played the full 90 minutes.
Chico Women’s Soccer will stay in Hilo, Hawai`i for their next game, taking the field this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. to face the Chaminade Swords, a team from Honolulu.
