The first Associated Students Board of the Directors meeting of the spring semester kicked off on Wednesday with updates on the executive director position, a decision made by the Interfraternity Council and the vice president reports.
The executive director for Associated Students is in charge of all the staff employed by the auxiliary, a position previously held by Jamie Clyde, who was dual serving as the university’s vice president for business and finance, and executive director for Associated Students. As of Dec. 31, 2025 that position has moved on to now-Interim Executive Director Jon Simmons, who plans to apply for a permanent position.
The human resources policy for the executive director position hasn’t changed for 22 years. In that policy — labeled HR 486 — the position was contractual, an agreement between both parties to carry out duties outlined in a contract for a period of time. A revision was presented to the board as a discussion item to change the seven-page document to three, with its biggest change making the position an at-will employee. An at-will employee can be fired at any time, for any legal reason.
Leah Mercer, human resources director, explained that this is standard across many other Associated Students auxiliaries in the system, as well as the university. Clyde explained to the board that this didn’t impact anything substantial in the executive director role.
The resolution will be voted on Feb. 11 at the board of directors meeting.
Vice President for Student Affairs Isaac Brundage announced to the board that the Interfraternity Council had decided to not allow any IFC frats to rush this semester. decision that he believes will be changed in the fall after discussions with the frats. This decision from the IFC does not impact sororities or multicultural fraternities.
Brundage explained that this decision came after multiple hazing incidents. Last semester, there were three fraternities that received cease and desist letters: Sigma Chi, Tau Kappa Epsilon and Lambda Chi Alpha.
The board had no questions for Brundage regarding the decision made by the IFC.
Both Simmons and Executive Vice President Beatrix Teaney said the Associated Student’s budget seemed to be in good standing and they had reached the halfway mark on their 2025-26 budget. Soon there would be budget revisions based on the assessment being performed now.
Committees are still struggling to retain members, some of whom are handpicked by senators, as their schedule conflicts with meeting times. This was a prevailing issue last semester, one that has carried over into the spring semester..
The facilities committee, chaired by AS Vice President of Facilities and Services Akylai Murzakulova, was unable to provide a meeting report to the Government Affairs Council after a member left the committee due to time conflicts.
The business committee, chaired by AS Vice President of Business and Finance Miguel Gabriel Sueki, was also unable to meet because of the same issue.
Both committees offered no report.
The next board of directors meeting has no listed date on its website as of the publishing date.
