There’s a new interest group emerging under the American Marketing Association that has encouraged Chico State students to be more involved with both club and intramural sports. The sports marketing team, a sub group of the AMA, has been active since 2025 and is trying to bring school spirit back to Chico State.
“We’re just a bunch of really passionate, creative people coming together and just helping the school grow club focus and sports spirit,” said Sam Richards, co-president of AMA and leader of the sports marketing team.
The club has been focusing on creating social media content for sports clubs on campus and has developed three packages for clubs to select from based on their content needs. The current packages include an interview package, an action shots package and a team shoot/media day package. All three packages are free of charge and can be accessed through reaching out to the sports marketing Instagram, @ama_sportschico.
A consistent piece of content they produce as part of their interview package is their club spotlight. Every new episode interviews a member from a different club sport, asking them their favorite part of the club and why others should be encouraged to join.
The club is described by members as a great experience and resume builder while still being a low time commitment. They receive access to free resources like their own sets of cameras and microphones they can use to regularly create content.
They also have students with past experience who are excited to help and teach others like Allison Burns, lead of content and strategy of the sports marketing team.
“My personal goals are to get into social media marketing, so being one of the leads has just helped me grow my resume,” Burns said. “Also, because I had so much sports marketing experience in high school, this is helping me teach others.”
Beginning in August 2025, the new club is still growing going into the second half of the school year. The main goal of the sports marketing team, described by Vice President Dylan Green, is to get their name out to as many sports clubs as possible in order to grow their brand and attract more members to AMA.
“Our goal is just being more sociable since we have to talk to a lot of clubs on campus,” Green said. “Having the ability to go up to people is a good skill to know how to do no matter what your major is.”
The American Marketing Association meets every Wednesday in Glenn Hall 112 from 6-7 p.m. The sports marketing team meets every Monday at 7 p.m. in Glenn Hall 306.
