This Monday, Chico State students can apply for the Donald A. Strauss Scholarship, which awards $15,000 to 10-15 college sophomores and juniors looking to fund humanitarian projects.
$7,000 is allocated for use to support the student’s educational needs, while the remaining $8,000 is designated as a grant for the student’s project expenses. The scholarship is meant to get projects up and running by the end of the student’s sophomore or junior year.
The Strauss Foundation is based in Newport Beach and has funded many notable projects focused on community engagement for the common good.
Last year’s recipient was anthropology major Annie Belter, who started Project G.R.O with the funds she received. The project aimed to incorporate hands-on gardening knowledge into elementary school programs in Glenn County and support elementary teachers who implement gardening activities into their curriculums.
“They’re looking for students who are passionate about doing that kind of work, at the grassroots level. Historically, students have used the funds to start programs both locally and abroad,” Magnus said. “Other projects, they are working in other countries with community leaders.”
The application process includes a succinct description of the proposed project as well as a letter of recommendation. Applicants who stand out to the selection committee demonstrate a desire to improve the lives of others, both at home and abroad.
Recipients of this award have a focus on outreach and bettering life for those around them.
