This story reviews the University Police Department’s daily crime logs. An Orion reporter spoke with Lt. Bryce Davison for more information regarding certain logged events from the weeks of Feb. 8-18.
Monday Feb. 9:
Call Type: Disturbance
A group of juveniles kicked a homeless man, injuring him. UPD officers arrived at the scene and couldn’t find the juveniles because they fled.
There were four male juveniles and two females. The homeless victim was walking towards the Children’s Park when UPD officers spotted him.
UPD requested an ambulance and he was transported to Enloe Hospital.
Friday Feb. 13:
Call Type: Vehicle Stop
A man was arrested for a DUI near the intersection of Seventh and Main Street.
UPD officers stopped him at about midnight for a vehicle code violation, but they shortly began field sobriety tests after noticing signs of intoxication.
“Oftentimes, what happens is when they (UPD) start, they stop the car for a vehicle code violation. And then, when they’re talking to the driver, they observe signs and symptoms of intoxication,” Davison said. “If they suspect intoxication, they’re gonna request them to get out of the car, they’ll conduct field sobriety tests, and so, that’s what happened here,” Davison said.
After conducting the tests, UPD officers arrested him.
Tuesday Feb. 17:
Call Type: Traffic Control/Incident
An anonymous tip said protesters were blocking the entry to parking structure one as they were trying to find parking.
The tip said the protesters were not letting people come into the parking structure unless they rolled their window down to take a flyer and talk to them.
UPD officers went out to check and the protesters were walking back and forth in front of the entrance.
“So they weren’t standing there blocking it, but it was severely slowing traffic,” Davison said.
A UPD officer talked to the protesters and there were no other calls made about the protesters, said Davison.
These protesters were part of the Teamsters Union, who’ve been protesting all week. They are employees at Chico who are trade workers, striking against the California State University system for not providing them with their contractual salary raises.
The information came from the daily crime logs in UPD’s media bulletin. Not all logs from Feb. 8-18 were featured in this story.
