Since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association in 1998, Chico State athletics has dominated in almost every sport. On Thursday, the university hosted the Wildcat Insider event, highlighting the achievements of our athletics programs for the last 20 years.
The event was hosted by the Executive Director of Athletics, Eric Coleman; women’s Volleyball athlete and media arts and design major, Gwyneth Wentzel; and the former Sports Communication Director, Luke Reid. Chico State President Steve Perez also appeared as a special guest.
The event kicked off by highlighting the achievements of the men’s and women’s cross country teams, both of which won the CCAA championship and the NCAA West Regional title. Both teams attended the NCAA championships in Kenosha, hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
It was also the first public introduction of the newly hired women’s Soccer Head Coach, Halle Meadows. After rebuilding the Bushnell University team and leading them to their first conference tournament in seven years, Meadows is grateful to join a program with a strong core.
“To come into a team with such a good culture already is really awesome and I’m super excited to be a part of that,” Meadows said.
The panel went on to discuss how Chico State student-athletes not only excel in their respective sports but also in the classroom. Chico State has 27 athletes with a 4.0 GPA, along with over 70% of all ’Cats athletes having a 3.0 or higher.
To close out the event, Coleman introduced the university’s new partnership with Adidas. The partnership will include Adidas uniforms for all sports programs and gear for all students at up to 40% off retail price.
“Wildcats today, Wildcats tomorrow, Wildcats forever,” Coleman said. “We want to make sure that we have the best student-athlete experience possible.”
Coleman was passionate throughout the event about getting our athletes the best gear and facilities to ensure Wildcat success. The university is confident in the improvements it has made to the athletics department over the years and will strive to continue them in the future.
