Chico State Hosts “Self-Care for Latinas” Workshop During Women’s History Month

First-generation Latinx students explore wellness, goal-setting, and community at a culturally centered event.

Every March, Women’s History Month highlights the achievements, resilience, and empowerment of women, honoring the vital role they play in shaping society.

In celebration, Chico State’s El Centro: Latinx Resource Center, The Well, and Well Counseling are hosting Self-Care for Latinas on March 11 from 3:30 to 5:50 p.m. at the Bell Memorial Union | The Well.

El Centro, located in Meriam Library, Room 172, supports Latinx student success by honoring heritage and creating opportunities. The Well, in the basement of the Bell Memorial Union, offers free resources for mental, physical, and holistic health.

The culturally centered workshop is designed for first-generation Latinx students, though all are welcome. Inspired by Raquel Reichard’s book Self-Care for Latinas, the event will guide students through hands-on activities to promote personal wellness.

The workshop will begin with a brief presentation, followed by the creation of vision boards, where students can set personal goals using magazine cutouts and art supplies. Attendees can also enjoy a snack of Tostitos Locos, a traditional Mexican treat. The first 40 students will receive a goodie bag containing various self-care items. All attendees will also get a raffle ticket for a chance to win a free copy of Self-Care for Latinas.

“Growing up in a very Mexican household, I wasn’t tough about self-care, and now that I’m navigating higher education, it also came with learning how to take care of myself, as school can get overwhelming. Learning self-care as a first-generation student navigating higher education was important,” said Miriam Jiménez Cuevas, Cultural Programmer at El Centro. “Taking care of yourself can be seen as selfish, but I think it’s important to reiterate that self-care doesn’t mean being selfish. For this event, I hope that other Latinas navigating higher education can understand the importance of doing self-care without feeling guilt.”

The workshop offers students a chance to explore wellness, connect with peers, and celebrate culture while learning practical strategies for managing stress and maintaining balance during their academic journey.

Students can RSVP at The Well. Food and supplies are available until supplies last.
