The Chico State Wildcats women’s basketball team beat Cal State Dominguez Hills 75-70 in overtime, sending them to the semi-finals of the CCAA tournament.
This win pushes the ’Cats to a 20-9 record and sets them up with a rematch against the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos.
The ’Cats had a strong first quarter, ending with a score of 21-15. They excelled with 18 points in the paint, compared to Dominguez Hills with only six.
The ’Cats slowed down in the second quarter, only scoring 11 points compared to the Toros 16 points, giving the ’Cats a mere one-point advantage going into halftime.
The third quarter was even on the offensive side, with both teams scoring 13 points.
The fourth quarter was an exciting one with the ’Cats down by two with 17 seconds left in regulation. Sophomore guard Sydney Peterson drove to the basket to tie the game up at 63, leading the ’Cats into overtime.
This is the first time the ’Cats have ever been into overtime in postseason play.
They had five minutes to prove themselves and advance to the next round of the tournament.
With two minutes remaining in overtime, the game was tied again, this time with a score of 70-70, leaving the Toros with fouls to give. The game came down to free throws with both Madison Parry and Kaylie Edge going five for six at the line, clinching the win by five points.
Parry put up a career high of 26 points and she earned a double-double with 14 rebounds as well.
Peterson matched her career high of 15 points while also having four steals.
Sophomore Sadie Slaughter put up a game-changing 10 points and nine rebounds.
The ’Cats next game is the Semi-final of the CCAA Tournament at Kellogg Arena. They play Friday at 2:30 p.m. against the one seed, Pomona
