The final weeks of spring semester are dwindling — and for some, the confidence of passing a class might be too. For those who might need the extra help, the Student Learning Center offers free subject tutoring, available in-person and online appointments.
SLC offers tutoring for many GE classes and can be booked online. Depending on the subject or course, classes are offered one-on-one or in small group settings. Waitlists are available for students to request specific classes and can be found by visiting the SLC.
Supplemental Instruction Coordinator Yer Thao said she formerly attended Chico as a low-income, first-generation student. Thao initially visited the SLC to seek help with an anatomy class during her undergraduate education, and said that tutoring helped her to pass the class and eventually graduate.
“It allowed me a chance to pass a really hard class that I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford a private tutor for,” she said.
With public colleges and universities taking steps toward affordability and inclusion initiatives, Thao said it’s important for resources like accessible tutoring to exist for those who might not have that resource, emphasizing the need to “make it equitable across the board for students.”
“Learning Centers are essential because our demographic now is not the typical higher-education demographic from hundreds of years ago,” she said.
Alex Rivera, a junior biochemistry major, tutors anatomy. For Rivera, the best part of tutoring is seeing “the relief on [his] students’ faces after tackling a complicated concept.” He said that anatomy is a challenging course because “there’s so much information that students have to tackle in such a short amount of time.”
Tutoring anatomy also assists Rivera in his long-term goal of going to medical school after he graduates by helping him “stay fresh” on essential concepts that will appear on the MCAT.
Freshman Bailey Deweese has attended tutoring sessions to help her with chemistry. She said that she attends tutoring before exams to help her review material and “go more in-depth” by asking questions in a smaller setting.
“It’s been a really good thing for me here on campus, and I’m glad I got into it,” she said.
Students interested in tutoring services can visit SSC 340 or call the SLC office at 530-898-6839. The SLC is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
