Every vote counts. As the Associated Students General Election is coming this week, there will be 17 representatives to vote for.
All enrolled students will have 48 hours to cast their vote. This is different than previous years, where it was one day. On the morning of election day, every Chico State student will receive an email with a link to the ballot. The link will also be available here on its website. You will need to sign in with your Chico State login to access the ballot.
“With students juggling work, school and extracurricular activities, an extra 24 hours could be the timing that allows folks to cast their vote,” said Brooke McCall, AS student involvement supervisor.
In addition, students can participate in revenue sharing, where students can help fund campus clubs and organizations. There will be three options: the third option is $5, the second is $7.50, and the first option is $15.
Associated Students is a student-led organization that intends to enrich campus life through governance, services and programs. This includes student government (the current election), where students are elected to represent the student body and serve on committees focused on advocacy and policy. AS operates the WREC and provides volunteering programs such as Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE).
The elected roles will provide opportunities for those elected to represent student interests within AS and serve in committees to advocate for students, said Kendra Wright, director of AS Government Affairs.
Student representatives can serve on many committees, where they can use their influence to enact change on campus.
Some of the committee’s representatives can be part of the Sustainability, Social Justice and Equity, AS Business Committee, AS Facilities Committee, Government Affairs Committee and AS Board of Directors, Wright said.
Students across campus look forward to the new change of election days being extended to two days.
Students near the Meriam Library on their walks expressed their opinions about the new change.
“I think it’s a good idea, it kind of gives everyone another opportunity to see which representatives they like more,” senior Will Novascone said.
The new election dates give students more time to vote.
“I think it gives people a lot more time to vote, I’m not opposed to it,” senior Sarah Pinzon said.
Students said they enjoy the flexibility and the amount of time it gives them in order to vote.
“It’s a very smart decision for them because then it gives students more time to vote,” junior Ariel Louangsabouth said.
AS General Elections allow students to vote for representatives to advocate for students on campus. It is important for students to partake in this election because voting has power.
