University Police Department arrested the Associated Students Concession Supervisor, Gannon Rodriguez, Wednesday night on suspicion of driving an AS Dining Services cart under the influence. He’s no longer employed with Associated Students, according to Leah Mercer, AS Human Resources Director.
Lt. Bryce Davison said that while people were in the area, there weren’t any reported injuries. Light scratches were found on the cart, which is called by staff “Sparky.” Rodriguez had access to the cart because he was a supervisor for AS.
The cart’s still being used, according to Thomas Rider, auxiliary business director for AS.
The Orion was unable to confirm if Rodriguez was on a shift during the incident, however Rider was able to confirm he was working that day.
According to a log entry from UPD’s media bulletin, a person passing by told officers at 8:18 p.m. that they saw a cart hit a sign near Glenn Hall. The same log entry notes an arrest was made for a DUI.
According to Public Relations Director Andrew Staples, UPD hasn’t yet confirmed what, or even if, a sign was hit on campus.
Davison said officers observed Rodriguez recklessly driving a golf cart around campus before pulling him over near Glenn Hall.
“They stopped the golf cart, and conducted an investigation, and determined he was driving under the influence,” he said.
At 8:34 p.m., UPD arrested Rodriguez, who was taken to Butte County Jail.
Mercer was unable to confirm if Rodriguez had been fired or if he quit, stating it was a “personnel matter.”
UPD is still investigating the incident and more information will be available following the investigation.
Rodriguez also worked at Butte Station as a supervisor. It’s unclear if he was working at the time of the arrest.
The Orion made multiple efforts to reach Rodriguez by call and text; but he did not respond by time of publication.
This story will be updated once more information becomes available.
Note: This story has been updated to add information regarding signage, cart and media logs.
