There’s a special kind of Thursday evening magic that settles over downtown Chico once April arrives. The sidewalks fill with people, music drifts across downtown and local businesses prepare to make their best sales of the year.
Downtown’s Thursday Night Market is officially back in season, bringing life, opportunity and communal unity to the streets of Chico.
Running every Thursday between April 9 and Sept. 24 from 6-9 p.m., the free-entry market transforms Main and Broadway streets into a bustling open-air celebration of local life. More than 200 vendors set up booths lining the streets, bringing together farmers, food makers, craftsmen, non-profits and unique small businesses to showcase the best of Chico’s local commerce.
The market has a pace of its own; it’s unhurried and layered, the kind that makes an hour disappear without explanation.
“It feels almost more like a block party than a market,” market-goer Renee Valducci said. “There’s a warmth and a welcomeness that I feel when I’m here, like people actually care about the products they’re putting out.”
Wooden crates of freshly harvested produce are stacked on tables, handmade goods from passionate crafters and food vendors fill the air with cultural aromas.
Among the many types of jewelry imaginable, woodworked art, pottery, crystal animals, canvassed paintings and homemade candles, the market features dozens of artistic expressions.
The kids kept themselves occupied with the various mini-games available, such as mini-golf, axe-throwing, ring toss, cornhole and prize wheels. They also flocked around the booths with toys and treasure-like contraptions on display while the adults lost track of time during this stress-free experience.
A live music act sets the tempo that everyone unconsciously follows throughout the evening. Will Hartman, one half of the live music duo Emma & Will, has been performing at the market since 2019 and is a huge fan of the community connection aspect of the event.

“I love it because I always see friends and people I know walking by, it’s fun to just be part of the community and play for some tips on a Thursday night,” Hartman said. “It’s so nice that we even have such a big event for all the small businesses in Chico, especially because our downtown is so pretty and not much happens here until the market opens.”
With that, the market’s organizers have also raised the stakes for 2026 by introducing monthly themed expos. Each month highlights a different angle of the community, giving vendors, organizations and visitors more reasons to engage in new ways every time they show up.
Currently, the theme is Health and Wellness. This entails that most of the local businesses and practitioners at the market will be on theme with helping people improve their physical and mental well-being.
The next themes, in monthly order, will be Outdoor Adventures, Unity Through Diversity, Giving Back, Weddings and Events and Pets.
Bike valet is available on-site, making it easy to pedal in from across town without worrying about finding and paying for a parking spot. The market runs rain or shine, canceled only if temperatures exceed 110 degrees during market hours.
“There’s so much authenticity that surrounds everything sold here, I love it, appreciate it and respect it, so of course I’m gonna purchase it,” Valducci said.
