Butte Hall banners call for divestment

Orange squares were scattered around Butte Hall Thursday afternoon, leading students to six banners hanging from the building outside.

Together, the banners read “DIVEST.”

Professor Mark Stemen’s Environmental Thought and Action class put together the demonstration as part of a campaign to get the university to divest its stock investments from fossil fuel companies.

This is the second event the class has held this week. Tuesday, it performed a human oil spill.

Divestment will be included in the Associated Students’ spring election ballot for students to vote on. If passed, the A.S. will ask the university to pull those stock investments.

“You can vote to get our money out of fossil fuels and into things that genuinely benefit the campus,” said Kevin Killion, a student in the class.

Spring elections run April 14-17.
