Junior Shannon Boling led the way with a career-best 17 kills as the Chico State volleyball took advantage of the Western Oregon Wolves’ .104 hitting percentage to secure their first win of the 2014 season. The ‘Cats won in straight sets to sweep the Wolves 25-10, 27-25, 25-18.

Chico State (1-2) won the first set thanks to some hitting and serving miscues by the Wolves. For the match, the ‘Cats had seven service aces to the Wolves’ one, as well as three less attacking errors.

A tightly contested second set also ended with the ‘Cats on top, and putting Western Oregon into too deep a hole to climb out of.

The final set concluded with the ‘Cats winning four straight points to take the match. The Wildcats were never seriously threatened in dropping the Wolves to 0-3 on the season.

Sophomore setter Tory Thompson handed out 34 assists to go along with three service aces. Seniors Emily Duran and Ellie Larronde had 15 and 10 digs respectively. Larronde also pitched in offensively with nine kills.

Chico State’s next match is Friday, Sept. 12 at Cal Poly Pomona.
