Women’s soccer team wins in overtime

The Chico State’s women’s soccer team came out on top with a 1-0 win against Cal State East Bay in a game that was decided in overtime Friday afternoon.

Defense was the story throughout the day, with both teams struggling to put the ball in the net. Both teams had 11 shots through regulation, but none were successful. The game need more time to be decided.

Stephanie Vaquerano’s first goal of the season couldn’t have come at a better time. Five minutes into overtime of a deadlocked 0-0 tie, Megan Tabler, a midfielder, set up Vaquerano to slip the ball into the left side of the net. The goal ended the game with the ‘Cats prevailing.

The Wildcats out-numbered Cal State East Bay 2-0 on shots in overtime. Solid defense and taking advantage of opportunities was the story of overtime.

Brianna Furner added another shutout to her career as the goalkeeper for the Wildcats. Furner had six saves on the day.

The shots on goal were close to even with Cal State East Bay topping Chico 7-5.

Nicole Roberts, Pooja Patel, Megan Tabler and Vaquerano all had shots on goal for the ‘Cats.

Next stop for the women’s soccer team will be Turlock on Sunday to continue league play against Cal State Stanislaus at 11:30 am.
