Not “Guilty” Pleasures

Everyone has at least one guilty pleasure, whether it be a show or pastime or some other rarely admitted secret that is a bit embarrassing to admit.

For instance, one of my guilty pleasures is the show Pretty Little Liars. I love it. But to only a select few will I admit I watch it.

I’ve heard of people embarrassed to admit they like “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” or “Twilight” or even certain musical groups, like “One Direction”.

Mostly, I’ve found it is labeled as a guilty pleasure for them because it has been labeled as terrible or stupid by society.

But why should there be a label like guilty pleasures for a category of things people enjoy?

What am I guilty of? Have I committed a crime for liking a TV show?

Have I broken some unspoken law of society that says I can’t enjoy something society says is terrible? Or that I can’t enjoy something that a certain stereotyped group likes because I’m not a part of that group?

No one should be embarrassed for liking what they like.

Honestly, those shows, movies or musical artists are popular for a reason. It’s because a lot of people enjoy it.

So don’t let society dictate what is okay to enjoy. Claim whatever is personally enjoyable, loud and proud.
