Congressman Doug LaMalfa was the guest speaker in two senior-level capstone classes, Agricultural Policy and Agricultural Issues on Monday.
LaMalfa, a farmer and businessman from Richvale, took students’ questions on issues of federal food and agricultural policy, including the 2013 Farm Bill, in the Bell Memorial Union.
One student asked about the prominence of elected representatives in the legislature with agricultural experience. LaMalfa said that between the house and the senate, about 20 had close ties to the industry and community.
LaMalfa also voiced his continued support for an amendment that requires welfare recipients to submit to drug testing prior to receiving benefits, one that he co-sponsored.
“I would be happy to see all 535 members of the Congress subjected to drug testing,” LaMalfa said.
