On a gorgeous Friday night for baseball, the Wildcats took game one of a weekend series against the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros, 7-0.

The ‘Cats broke open their scoring in the third when junior second basemen Andrew Carrillo singled to drive in senior shortstop Cody Slater. Sophomore infielder Clayton Gelfand and senior Connor Huesers followed with RBI hits of their own to make the team’s lead 3-0.

In the fifth, the team took advantage of the Toros mistakes and scored two more. One from an error to score senior first basemen Dylan Garcia, and the other with a little deja vu as Carrillo drove in Slader again to make it 5-0.

Slader added an RBI of his own in the 6th, hitting a fielder’s choice to drive in junior outfielder Peter Lecce.

Later in the inning, junior catcher Cody Bistline scored on a pass ball, yet another mistake by the Toros to conclude the scoring in the game.

On the mound, senior pitcher Luke Barker was dominant. Barker went 8 shutout innings, allowing four hits, two walks while striking out three. Senior pitcher Robert Engels closed the door in the ninth.
