Locals have a chance to experience Afghan culture while helping educate young female refugees through a fundraising banquet on March 26.

Hosting the event are Adam and Miriam Walter, a local couple who has family ties to Pakistan, where the refugees reside. Helping make the event possible are nursing students at Chico State volunteering their time.

To contribute funds for the Afghan girls’ primary schools, the banquet will cost $40 per person.

Guests will experience traditional Afghanistan fare, entertainment by local band The Hot Toddies, a silent auction and a sale of authentic Pashmere shawls and jewelry.

The banquet will be held at 6 p.m. at the Arc Pavilion at 2040 Park Ave.

The Walters are hoping to raise at least $5,000 this year. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at Azad’s Martial Arts Center and Mr. Kopy. Adam Walter can be reached at 809-1946
