Chico State wins overtime thriller on Senior Day

Senior Day at University Stadium
By Shelby Keck

Seniors Gail Bassett, Danielle Leiva, Carly Singer and Scotie Walker (with flowers) are honored Sunday, Oct. 27., during Senior Day at University Stadium.

Stephanie Vaquerano scored her first career goal to lift the Chico State women’s soccer team to a 1-0 overtime thriller Sunday against Cal State L.A. in the Wildcats’ final home game of the regular season.

After the regulation period, where Chico State was outshot by Cal State L.A. 12-5, the junior put it through the next on an assist from Courtlynn Cerrito.

“It means more than I can explain,” Vaquerano said of the goal. “It means a lot for our team, it puts us right back in it.”

Goalie Brianna Furner had four saves on the day for the Wildcats, including an amazing deflection to preserve the tie with less than four minutes to go in the game.

Sunday was also Senior Day, marking the last career home match for Carly Singer, Danielle Leiva, Scotie Walker and Gail Bassett.

The Wildcats move to 5-7-3 and and 3-7-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while Cal State L.A. goes to 8-5-3 and 6-5-3 in the CCAA.

Chico State is now four points away from a berth in the CCAA Championship tournament, meaning that the squad must win one and either win or tie the other of their final two games of the season to secure a spot in the postseason.
