A fire broke out on a bridge north of Hegan Lane Monday.
The fire at the trestle type bridge was reported at 8:16 p.m. according to Public Information Officer Rick Carhart of CALFIRE Butte County.
Five engines and 25 personnel were deployed to contain the fire.
Carhart said the fire was “knocked down within an hour,” meaning it was contained and shortly put out.
The fire affected the “main line,” but the “siding” remained intact according to Justin Jacobs, Media Director of Union Pacific, who operated the rails. The siding is normally only used for passing but has since been used for all traffic, slowing things down noticeably, he said.
“It’s not ideal,” said Jacobs, “but obviously safety is a priority.”
Jacobs said Union Pacific sent engineers on site immediately, and said, “The goal is to have it reopened later today.”
