Student struck by train was drunk

James Lowder, had a blood alcohol content of .20 before being hit by a train Nov. 14, according to the Butte County Coroner’s Office. Lowder, a sophomore pre-business administration major, was found dead on the scene near West Seventh Street.

An Amtrak engineer notified police when he saw the dead student alongside the tracks around 4 a.m. Police say he was hit by a train that passed through earlier that morning at 3 a.m.

Lowder was believed to have been walking home after a party, according to police. His roommates sent him a text after he left, but never heard back from him.

Lowder, born Dec. 29, 1993, enrolled at Chico State in Fall
2012.
He was from the Folsom area.
