After the Wildcats split the doubleheader on Friday, they fell flat in the doubleheader on Sunday, losing to the UC San Diego Tritons 4-0 and 10-4 respectively.
Behind a strong pitching and five innings of work from Alex Molina, back to back triples in the sixth inning resulted in four earned runs. Molina also pitched both games the day before.
Both teams had a tough time picking up hits in the first game, with the Wildcats having only four hits. The team couldn’t pick up the big hit, leaving six runners on base and were held scoreless.
Perhaps a pep talk pumped the Wildcats for the second game, because the ’Cats came out in the first two innings with two runs in each inning to take a 4-0 lead. Amanda Cordeiro contributed with a two-run double in the second inning.
Unfortunately, a six run third inning swung the momentum back to the Tritons and they ran with it, taking advantage of five errors. The Tritons scored once in the fourth and fifth innings, and twice in the sixth to put the game out of reach for the Wildcats.
The Tritons went on to win the game 10-4 and the loss moves the Wildcats to 3-6 on the season. The Wildcats play at home for the first time this season this week with back-to-back doubleheaders beginning on Friday at noon against Cal State Stanislaus.
