A suspect has been arrested after an employee was approached by a man outside Kendall Hall who appeared to be carrying a gun at around 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday.
The suspect, Khalid Warithlu Assamad, 38, is not a part of the campus community and was seen leaving the area after the incident, according to Chico State president, Steve Perez.
Assamad was arrested off-campus on suspicion of brandishing a weapon and campus disruption after officers interviewed the witness and accessed security footage.
The University Police Department issued a timely warning notification Wednesday morning, but some campus community members did not receive it right away.
Due to the software the university uses, Salesforce, the campus community may receive notifications at different times, according to Andrew Staples, Chico State’s public relations manager.
Third-year student, Brodie Schreder, said students should’ve been notified earlier, especially those living in the dorms.
“There’s way more of us than staff, we should know just as soon,” Schreder said.
Weapons are prohibited on campus, and violates California Penal Code 626.9, among others.
Another suspicious activity incident occurred at Kendall Hall on Tuesday, but they are not connected. To keep track of campus crime activity, go to the CSU Chico Police Department crime map.
If anyone sees something suspicious or threatening on campus, call UPD at 530-898-5555 to make a report.
The Orion will release more information as updates occur.
