A Chico State student is dead after being found unresponsive Tuesday night at an apartment swimming pool in Chico.

The Chico Fire Department found Aaron Drange, a year 20-year-old recording arts major, in a pool at an apartment complex on West Fourth Avenue, according to a campus email. He was transferred to Enloe Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from drowning. Chico Police will not be investigating the incident as a crime.

According to the campus email:

Drange was born on March 28, 1994 and grew up in the Los Angeles area. He enrolled into Chico State beginning in the fall 2012 semester.

He played saxophone, piano and sang, performing in the Chamber Singers, A Cappella Choir, Jazz X-Press, Symphonic Wind Ensemble and other groups at Chico State.

“Aaron was a superstar in the music department,” said Joe Alexander, music professor and associate dean, College of Humanities and Fine Arts. “He was good at everything he did, and everybody loved him.”

The university flag will be lowered Thursday in Drange’s memory.

Free urgent walk-in services are offered at the Counseling and Wellness Center in Student Services Building Room 430, Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. over the summer.
