Written by Caryl Chuchill, “Top Girls” tells the story of Marlene, a recently-promoted managing director of an employment agency in London. During a celebration of her promotion, various legendary and historical women offer their insights on womanhood, ambition and maternity.
In Churchill’s writing, these figures double as Marlene’s coworkers, relatives and friends. Throughout the show Marlene confronts her ascent into executive status, seemingly emulating the male oppressor, and encouraging women to adopt stereotypical male traits.
This show also portrays the abandonment of Marlene’s daughter, and the barren present of her emotional and sexual life.
Directed by Jami W. Miller, Chico State’s production of “Top Girls” features a crew of student designers and tech that bring the show to life; in addition to the all-female, seven person cast.
The University Box Office’s content warning expresses that “Top Girls” contains mature themes and includes references to abortion, child abandonment, alcohol use, emotional distress and profanity. There is also a theatrical use of stage blood, representing menstrual blood. Viewer discretion is advised.
“Top Girls” is produced through Concord Theatricals.
