Whether it’s avoiding the “freshman 15” or relieving stress, hitting the gym is a good way to stay fit mentally and physically. Students have their pick of gyms around town, but which one is right for you?
Chico Sports ClubDistance from campus: 1.95 miles
Chico Sports Club offers a variety of classes seven days a week, but yoga is the clubs “premier program,” said assistant manager Chris Conway. There are 12 classes dedicated to yoga. The club also boasts a full-size regulation basketball court, two racquetball courts, a lap pool and a 90-degree therapeutic pool.
The club also staffs degreed exercise physiologists who offer community wellness programs, Conway said. Some of these programs include a cancer awareness and rehabilitation program and a diabetes education and exercise program.
In Motion FitnessDistance from campus: 2.03 miles
In Motion Fitness offers a variety of classes throughout the week. Members or nonmembers have full access the on-site Tuscany Day Spa. In Motion also has an aquatics center with a covered pool and spa, which allows the club to have water aerobics year-round, said fitness operations manager Marie Phillips.
For those who need some recuperation, there is an on-site physical therapist, Phillips said. There are also certified personal trainers available.
The fitness resort is currently remodeling and adding onto the club, both inside and out, Phillips said. Within the next three months, Grilla Bites, a popular organic restaurant, will be opening at In Motion Fitness.
“We’re not a club, we are a resort,” Phillips said.
Fit One Athletic ClubDistance from campus: 3.21 miles
The club creates an inviting atmosphere for all of its classes, said general manager Scott Navarro. The creative and innovative programs such as “Get Groovin'” and “Aqua Fusion” are all done in a fun atmosphere Monday through Saturday.
Tony DeLuca, the owner of Fit One Athletic Club, has followed the model of “surround yourself with good people and everything else will happen,” said Navarro.
The staff at Fit One Athletic Club encourages those interested in joining to come and look and learn about the club before signing up, Navarro said.
The club’s comfortable lobby and welcoming staff provide a “Cheers”-like feeling, Navarro said.
Chico FitnessDistance from Campus: 0.60 miles
Chico Fitness is new to town, and its proximity to campus works to its benefit. The club’s members are mostly students, said Matt Ferguson, Chico Fitness manager.
The basketball court and “Cardio Theater” are also main attractions, Ferguson said.
For students who like to catch up on their favorite TV shows while on the treadmill, Chico Fitness boasts its “Cardio Theater.” Located in the front of the gym are 10 TVs mounted above the equipment.
The club doesn’t offer any fitness classes, but members can usually always find a machine to work out on, he said.
