Feminist Fridays is the Gender & Sexuality Equity Center’s new event held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Friday on Trinity Commons and will run until Dec. 5. The campaign is aimed to empower and support activists and aspiring activists.
The event will have a different theme each week that ties into a bigger monthly theme. This month, the overall theme is “Intimate Partner Violence” in respect to October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Interns from the GSEC will run the booth on campus which features an activity. This Friday’s activity was posting what your idea of a healthy relationship and an unhealthy relationship looks like. Those who participate in the activity get an activist-themed button.
Students who show up to the event wearing any type of activist themed T-shirt will be entered in a raffle to win a feminist-themed basket.
Erin Griffey, a senior economics major and GSEC intern, was at the booth on the first day of the new weekly event and was excited to see how the booth turned out after all of the hard work that went into it.
“It was a group effort of GSEC,” Griffey said. “Our program coordinator Emilee Hunt came up with the idea, and we all just ran with it.”
Emilee Hunt, the GSEC program coordinator, hopes that throughout the semester, more individuals embrace feminism because of the event.
“We advocate for consistent programming on topics that are vital for women’s equality, and figured the best way to accomplish this would be to implement a semester-long campaign,” Hunt said.
Everyone is encouraged to participate in Feminist Fridays no matter what type of activism they are part of.
“I want everyone to know that the event will leave them feeling empowered,” Hunt said. “I think spending 10 minutes of your time to enhance yourself and the world around you is always a good idea.”
