Chico State Republicans built a “Free Speech Wall” in the gauntlet Wednesday, and drew in a vocal response from students.
Chico State Republicans asked students to write whatever they were feeling or thinking on their wall.
“To encourage people to express themselves, said Jack Breuker, political science major, and a member of the Chico State Republicans, when asked about the purpose of the wall.
The response from students was mixed with a widespread of viewpoints written on the wall including:
- All Lives Matter
- Multiculturalism is not a Strength
- White privilege does exist
- Nothing is free in life
- Democrats suck
- The War on drugs? More like the war on minorities
- Republicans suffer from group thinking
Breuker said the response was “about what I expected.” “We don’t want the university to become an echo chamber.”
“College Campuses need more of this,” said anthropology major, Katie Prather.
“Free speech is all well and good, but you have to be willing to listen,” said Maya Padilla, political science major.

The only free speech young republicans care about is the kind that they use to put women and other marginalized groups down. That creates an unsafe atmosphere for anyone who doesn’t agree. Please stop letting the Alt-Right have a strong platform at Chico State.

The ignorance in this comment is astounding. As a Chico State student, I’ve seen nothing but positivity and respect from this club. God forbid young people actually take an interest in politics? They’re the ones that will clean up the mess the baby boomers have created after-all.

“Positivity” and “respect” only if you are caucasian. I stood and watched members of the group stare down and dismiss many of our African American and Latino students walking across the breezeway that day. There’s a reason why they are an exclusively white group sparring a few outliers. Zero outreach to anyone who doesn’t fit a conservative profile. It’s pathetic and you are pathetic.

Proud liberal here,
Considering that the Republican club encouraged people who disagreed with them to write on their “wall”, your assertion has no basis in reality.

Are you kidding me. Im a non white, non Republican student and I had an incredibly friendly and welcoming conversation with the members that very same day. I dress like a crazy person and I didn’t get an “judging” stare from the members. Youre obviously embellishing the real to fit your own reality. Instead of stereotyping a group of people based on their political beliefs try talking to them first.
