One of the most interesting and intuitive pianists of the decade will make his debut Chico performance 2 p.m. Sunday at Laxson Auditorium.

Chico is the first stop on classical pianist Alpin Hong’s fall tour, during which he will premiere work from his upcoming album “Myths and Legends.”

Hong, who is renowned for the energy he delivers during shows, aims to impress audience members of all ages.

“If I don’t tear the roof off, I feel as if I haven’t done my job properly,” he said. “You never know what might show up when I play. Maybe some Zelda, Super Mario or Imagine Dragons. Just depends on the show.”

Hong is a creative artist who takes his love of performing seriously and desires to make classical music appealing to everyone.

“I feel like I’m the one to go see,” he said. “I want to move people emotionally. People shouldn’t have to read about me in a program, but understand me from my performance.”

The show, presented by Chico Performances, will feature works from a variety of composers, such as Mozart, Mussorgsky and Gershwin. It may have a surprise or two as well.

“I’ll be closing with (Gershwin’s) ‘Rhapsody in Blue,'” Hong said. “It is probably my best piece. This piece allows me to communicate what it really means to be an American.”
