Local artists will cover Prince in ‘Purple Rain’

The songs of Prince’s “Purple Rain” will be divided among local musicians and played in various styles, ranging from jazz to rock, Feb. 21 in the Bell Memorial Union auditorium.

The concert will include jazz quartet Bogg, alternative rock band The Shimmies and rock ‘n’ roll outfit The Lolos.

The concept behind the latest show from Uncle Dad’s Art Collective and A.S. Productions is simple.

“We do an album from start to finish as if you are listening with headphones,” show producer Josh Hegg said. “Not only will (the production) pay homage to Prince, but it will showcase a range of local artists and deliver them to a new audience.”

“Purple Rain” will also include original dance and visual projections between songs.

“Students should come see this because it’s live, local art here in town and it’s catered to them,” Hegg said. “For five bucks you can walk in and just have this crazy experience.”

This is the fifth cover show the collective has done and it is expected to be a sold out.

“Take a chance with some local stuff,” Hegg said. “Worst thing is you lost five bucks. But maybe you’ll find some art that you really love and that you can appreciate and that inspires people.”
